IN BRIEF:
- Multichoice Kenya will introduce its new four-tier package structure from November 5, 2026 as its shifts its strategy towards the wider mass market.
Multichoice Kenya has unveiled its new package lineup in a major overhaul of its Kenyan offering, as it shifts its strategy from premium subscriptions and price increases to making content available to a wider mass-market audience.
The new four-tier structure, which takes effect on November 5, replaces the existing six-package line-up with Starter priced at Sh750, Select at Sh1,500, Sports at Sh3,000 and Ultimate at Sh7,300.
The changes bring the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League together in one dedicated sports package, while the cheapest tier will include a selected live Match of the Week from the biggest leagues in the world, like the Premier League.
Under the new package structure, DSTV Starter will offer more than 116 channels, including Maisha Magic Plus, Maisha Magic Loko, Maisha Magic Poa, Cartoon Network, Disney Junior, La Liga, Novela+, Pearl Magic, Movie Legends, Local FTAs channels and a new channel – SuperSport KICKOFF.
DSTV Select, at Sh1,500, will have more than 149 channels, including blockbuster movie channels, local and international series, a selection of fantastic football including Serie A and other sports, lifestyle, religious and all the kids’ channels.
The DSTV Sports package, priced at Sh3,000, will carry more than 159 channels, including all Premier League and UEFA Champions, Europa and Conference Leagues, WWE, UFC targeted towards sports fans. DStv Sports also includes the general entertainment channels on DStv Select.
DSTV Ultimate, priced at Sh7,300, offering more than 180 channels, will be DStv’s most comprehensive premium offering, combining everything in the Sports and Movies & Series packages with additional premium sport, including Formula 1, MotoGP, Cricket, rugby, ATP tennis and golf majors.
DSTV is also lowering the initial cost of joining the service, with a high-definition decoder and satellite dish priced below Sh2,000 when bought alongside the Starter package.
The revised structure reflects a broader strategic shift at MultiChoice, which was acquired by French media group Canal+ in 2025.
The group is moving away from a strategy that placed greater emphasis on premium subscriptions and price increases towards making content available to a wider mass-market audience.
Speaking during Canal+'s third-quarter analyst conference call, Chief Financial Officer Amandine Ferré said the new offer was designed to make lower-priced packages more attractive and appealing to the mass market.
“The ambition of this new offer was really to change the strategy that MultiChoice had. MultiChoice used to have the strategy to really focus on [ premium ] sales and increase the prices. Our strategy is very different, “ said Amandine Ferré.
“Our objective is really to be a mass market offer and to have powerful content even in the lower offers,” Ms Ferré told analysts.
Multichoice Kenya Managing Director, Nzola Miranda, reiterated the change of strategy during the launch of the new packages.
“We now belong to a group - that is a global group - that has a different philosophy of the business, of mass market. More people to watch our content. That’s why we are changing this time to make sure our great content is available for more and more people and not be restrictive to some.”
The overhaul comes as DSTV's Kenyan subscription base has recovered over the past year. The pay TV operator had 259,047 active subscriptions as of June 2026, up 37 per cent from 188,824 in June 2025 according to latest data released by Communication Authority of Kenya
Ms Ferré told analysts MultiChoice had seen improvements in its subscriber base in some English-speaking markets outside South Africa and Nigeria.
Multichoice’s like-for-like revenue decline slowed to 2 per cent in the third quarter, from 3.3 per cent in the second quarter and 3.6 per cent in the first quarter.
